Sunstrider: Crossing Stars

My first independent film project, inspired by animated shows I grew up watching and my love for science-fiction adventures! It will be 2D animated in ToonBoom Harmony, an episodic series with self-contained storylines and an overarching plot.

The concept image was drawn in Adobe Illustrator.

Synopsis

The crew of the Sunstrider find themselves crash landed on the uncharted planet of Astraorus. With their systems needing to be repaired or rebuilt from scratch, they try to make the best of the situation and survive the planet’s unfamiliar wilderness. Little do they know, more lurks on the planet than they first thought, and a new ally comes from the most unexpected of places.

Our crew consists of the young captain Adriyen, who’s still learning how to lead after following for so long; Bracken, the rough-and-tumble “muscle” of the crew, with a big heart and concerning lack of impulse control; Axtin, the “rebellious teenager”, an overconfident and independent young man who hides his insecurities behind his ego and swagger; Caedence, the “rules lawyer”, who lives for organization and structure, and the only thing she likes more than that is the codes of conduct; and finally, Drillbit, the sarcastic automaton assigned to the crew, an engineer/maintenance bot whose suddenly learning how to wear many more hats after the crash.

Style

This series would be an action/adventure, science-fiction animated show targeted towards children and young adults, similar to those of the late 2000s to early 2010s. It will be 2D animated, similar in style to DC’s animated media or Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Settings

Astraorus

The planet the Sunstrider crew find themselves on, where “uncharted territory” is an understatement. The planet is as diverse as Earth is when it comes to different biomes and ecosystems, but the majority of the series will be in a temperate-style forest with plants and animals that are just weird enough to be considered “alien”. Other areas on Astraorus to be explored might include meadows, deserts, beaches and oceans, just to name a few.

Crashed Sunstrider Base

Inspired by Hasbro’s Transformers: Robots in Disguise series, the crew will set up their base of operations in and around the crash site of their ship. This will allow for an eclectic/organized chaos feel and give the crew space to move around. As the series progresses, it’ll also allow the viewers to watch as they slowly rebuild and as nature is integrated in.
